Another finely curated selection of works for the recorder either written for, adapted to or arranged for the instrument, some by Tabea Debus herself, one of the most insightful of all musicians promoting and expanding the recorder's presence and stature today.

"Johann Sebastian Bach's responsibilities as a teacher inspired him to create a myriad of pieces for the benefit of his students, both in and outside his family. This imagined folio of lessons highlights various facets of music-making and learning: from copying and arranging, through accompanying and ornamenting, to explorations of style and technique. There are several sets of pieces that Bach collated with his lessons in mind." {Booklet Notes}

This unifying concept for the album ties everything together very well. From the sorrowful opening Adagio of the Albinoni sonata originally scored for violin and continuo, to the single line reduction of the French Suite, to the quasi-baroque style and sound of the 2022 work by Nante, one can hear a common thread throughout that would serve very well as teaching material for any aspiring musician. It all comes to a rewarding conclusion with the Concerto in B-flat Major in which Tom Foster employs a Chamber Organ for the accompaniment, an instrument that partners perfectly with the recorder.

Other recordings by Tabea Debus that I've previously reviewed include Cantata per Flauto, Tr!jo Sonaten, and Favourites. All of which any and all recorder music enthusiasts should acquire. This new release is like icing on the cake. Her fluid technique and expressive delivery never fail to impress.
