When I first heard the American chamber choir Conspirare and reviewed their recording titled Sing Freedom!, I had pointed out that they produced a warm a cappella sound. You know, the type of choral sound that swaddles you within a soothing sonic cocoon. Well the same impression applies with their new recording titled The Hope of Loving featuring the music of American composer Jake Runestad. Other fine qualities include a seamless and effortless delivery, smooth entries, perfect blend and highly gradual dynamics. And this time around director Craig Hella Johnson has certainly picked the music of a composer that perfectly matches this choir's sound. Runestad's music is gently stirring and evocative. His choice of instrumentation, when needed, is unobstrusive and befits the voices extremely well. Soft and distant piano ripples or strings that create a contrasting foil to the choir, and yet enhances the warmth of the human voice. The audio recording captures the 25 voices of Conspirare from precisely the right distance, setting them in a naturally spacious acoustic that is a pleasure to hear.
