5 CD SET - DECCA 4757315 OR 000623502 In this well filled box set you will find most of Tchaikovsky's important and well known works, all very well performed under the expert direction of Zubin Mehta. The main attraction on this set for me is the exciting interpretation of the 1812 Overture. Too many recordings, old and new, put too much emphasis on the cannon shots near the end of the piece and therefore completely disregard all the great music leading to those speaker destroying cannons. The cannons and bells in this recording certainly are impressive, but it's the momentum and anticipation in the preceding music, so well played here, that really makes them effective. You can feel that a battle is about to take place because the music takes you there. Recommended without reservations! Jean-Yves Duperron |
