JOHN DOWLAND - Selected Lute Music

JOHN DOWLAND - Selected Lute Music - Jakob Lindberg (Lute) - 7318590008249 - Released: November 1996 - BIS Records CD824

If you were to have only one CD in your collection of music written specifically for the Lute, I would recommend this recording without hesitation. After all, John Dowland (1563-1626) was considered the unsurpassed lute virtuoso of his day, and I certainly consider Jakob Lindberg to be one of today's best lutenists. He is the first lutenist to have recorded the complete solo lute music by John Dowland and his recording of Bach's music for solo lute is considered to be one of the most important interpretations of these works. His discography is so extensive as to make him one of the best advocates for the instrument. This CD conveniently draws together the best from his 4-disc exploration of all of Dowland's lute music. The recorded sound as well as the sound of the instrument are superb. A few minutes in and you've travelled back 400 years. Highly recommended!
