There's already a plethora of extant recordings of these two outstanding Sonatas on the market, by some of the keyboard giants of the past, the stellar pianists of today, as well as newcomers trying to establish a foothold by being brave enough to scale these summits of piano literature. Most of them go for the jugular, with highly dramatic, even thunderous accounts. Spanish pianist Josep Colom opts for melodic definition, harmonic clarity, and most of all a clearly expressed musical narrative. He underlines the poetic nature of the Chopin, and the symphonic breadth of the Liszt, with a solid yet understated technique which avoids speed simply for the sake of velocity. The linear direction of motivic subjects is always clearly defined, as well as the harmonic connections between the left and right hand, and from one phrase to the next. All of which is faithfully captured in this finely engineered audio recording by Gonzalo Noqué at Eudora Records.
